New strings: silks riding on bridge barrels. Problem?

Sign in to disble this ad
Heh, thread title says it all, but just in case...

Installed different strings... a set of Chromes on my Fender 57 AVRI PBass (it already had Boomers on there, when it came to me).

The silk wraps extend out onto the barrels of the bridge. Should I trim the silk back a little? I don't want to lose any sustain (I need as much as I can get right now) or tone. Is it good to have bare metal string riding on the barrel (especially on the 'headstock side' of the barrel slope)? For some reason, I'm guessing maybe yes...?

This may be a dumb question because I haven't actually A/B'd the bass with trimmed silks (it's 3 am here). I figured I would ask here, and maybe chew the fat. I hope this isn't one of those "man is he lazy" questions.

I have the same bass and use the same strings, and the silks just barely come over the saddle doesnt seem to affect mine at all

First off, if you want all the sustain you can get, flats aren't for you. But as far as I know, the silk should be fine. Pics would help if you can get them for us.

I just put a set of Chromes on my Classic 50's P,and had to cut back the silk on the E string with a razor blade.

It does look like too much silk, IMO you should trim, if you'll do it gently nothing bad would happen

Question: Did you adjust the intonation for the new set? That may solve the problem.
