Question New strings time!

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, the strings that came on my Ibanez RD300 snapped about 5 minutes ago after a year of abuse, so its time for a new set! I dont know much about strings so i figured you guys could help me out in selecting a new set.

I play Rock/Metal. I always use a pick, i tend to dig in and pluck the string moderatly hard. At the moment a play through a crappy 15w Ashton amp, but I'll be getting an SWR LA12 for X-Mas (THANK GOD!).

Thanks for the help.

Rotosound Swing Bass are good strings, don't let the name fool, you they work for Rock/Metal fine. I also play rock/metal and use a pick. I use the 95-40 set on a 34.5" scale bass. It came with strings that were either 100-45 or 105-45. I use the thinner strings (which have less tension than the thicker ones) cause I like bends (I'm a Pink Floyd/David Gilmour Fan). If you want a stiffer set go with the 100 or 105.

Thanks for your input All_Your_Bass. I've found a set of Roto Swing Bass 45-105's at my local music store. I'll keep them in mind for the time being.

One of my friends who is in a metal band reccomended Dean Markley strings, what are these like compared to Roto's?

If you use a set of strings for a year or longer, I would say that you could use just about any roundwound because they all sound the same once they're dead.

Or the same thing the other way around, just use any cheap string. If you change them at reasonable intervals they're going to sound better than the best string left on until they break.

I'd ask Santa for an LA 15 instead of the LA 12 not much more money and a lot more amp imho

Yeah, everybody says just pay a little more and get the LA 15. I'll try and convince Santa it's a good idea. lol. Even if I do end up with an LA 12, its just going to be a little practice amp for my room, so 60w will do just fine.

Back to the strings topic, I got some Roto's this morning (45-105).

Thanks for the help everyone

DR High Beams.

Hands down the best, I had some for a year when I decided I needed new strings, so I got the same, but I got another pack for my new bass as well as the strings that were on it were fine.

Holy cow! I forgot what they sound like new, and they sound like that for a few months of heavy playing.

Well I still want to get another set for my Washburn, I really dont like the strings that come with that bass. I was looking at DR Hi Beams, but my bass player friend who has played for 11 years WORSHIPS his Dean Markley Blue Steels. So I might go with one of those two.
