New vs Old Strings - Sound Comparison

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello guys,

I was interested in assessing peoples' perception of the difference in sound between new and old strings in a fairly objective manner.

I've recorded a few samples (sorry for the poor playing, I'm a beginner) and it would be cool if you could vote for which sample sounds like it's using the new strings.

The setup is as follows:

Strings - Rotosound 66, 45-105 gauge (stainless steel roundwound). The old ones are 6 months old, the new ones are fresh out of the pack this evening.

Bass - Jazz bass, rear pickup and tone all the way up, front pickup a little less than halfway up.

Signal chain - Bass -> limiter pedal -> pod xt (no effects) -> Reaper

If possible, could you refrain from posting your voting choices in the thread as it would be nice to keep people blind to each others' choices.

Thanks guys, here's the samples. If you're wondering about the bizarre naming scheme it's because I wanted to try and avoid altering peoples' preconceptions with consecutive numbers and letters like a,b, or 1,2,3 etc.

Sample 1:

Sample 3:
