Hello everyone,
I'm really new to the bass world and I have a few simple questions that may have been asked before... Right now I'm using roundwound strings and was wondering what the sound difference is between flats and rounds, and while we're at it what's the difference in sound between p basses and jazz basses? Yes I know Im a complete noob

Have you tried using the search function? This has been covered to great extent for decades.

Admittingly, no I didn't. I just assumed people here would be easy going and not mind answering simple questions that would save me 10 minutes of browsing through 500 posts (because if I type in round and flatwound strings I'll get every post that says "string" in it) using the search function.

Here are the short answers:

Flat Wounds: Thuddy and Mellow, but can have some punch
Round Wounds: Bright and Punchy, sometimes zingy
Jazz Bass: Has tones from Warm and articulate, to growling.
P-Bass: Thuddy and Punchy.

Sweet, short answers were all I needed helped plenty. I noticed Deftones uses a jazz bass at least I believe the Stingray is a jazz bass. I'm into rock/hardcore/death metal/ and black metal. Do most people in those genres use jazz basses?

The stingray is not a jazz bass. It has a pickup style and tone all its own.

Welcome to TalkBass! If you read the posts here you will find that most of the bass players here have more than one bass. Many have several and some have over 40! My main players are a Stringray 5, Jazz and a Aria SB1000. They all have their own sound and I use them depending on the tone I want. For me, one bass just won't do it all. Good luck.

No it doesn't. Just pick up one you think looks good, play it, and if you like it, there you go!

Been doing that for 14 years now, I don't find basses as much as they find me.

A P with flats suits me, so does a J with rounds, but sometimes I prefer a P/J with rounds. On occasion a hollow-body suits my needs. Good thing I have all of them. What will I ever do if I need a Stingray? Hmmm...time to go shopping...

Yup, people around here are pretty decent! I know how you feel about searches on simple topics.

You like rock/hardcore/death metal/ and black metal? I think a P-bass would suit you fine!

That being said, don't you think this looks like a cool bass that would suit the above genre? It's a "Scorpion" Jazz type bass.
