Newbie String Question 4 Squier VM Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass, which I like very much. It came with Fender 7250ML strings. They sound fine to my ears, but seem to create lots of unwanted tones and are quite noisey. Now I know that I need to work on damping the strings, which is being learned. Would a string change help to possibly flat wound strings or another brand of rounds? My interest are only as a hobby and I'm playing rock, blues, and trying to learn to slap.

I have a VMJB, and I find that the pickups are the main component in your issue. Those pups are VERY articulate and full range. The VMJB is the brightest bass I own. Try backing the pickups down a bit, it might help. Don't put Stainless Steel Lo-Riders on there, it won't help with your overtones at all!

Flats will definitely help. TI Jazz Flats (JF344) sounds perfect to me. If not flats then DR Nickle Lo Riders.
