Newish to strings

Sign in to disble this ad
Right now I am using Ernie balls purple case little more thicker then standard strings they last maybe 2 months under 3-20 hour a week playing. They sound very bad at first but once they are broken then are pretty good. My question is what wires would you suggest for metal type playing I'm looking for a set of wires with some bite under eadg and dadg tuning. I'd prefer thinker strings and would consider flatwounds also It would be a bonus if the strings are gentle on the bass. Just send out a few names I'd probably try em all.

for metal... there's probably no "best string for metal", but avoid flats. they're not what you're looking for, they have a characteristically mellow sound.
Try some of the standards first, D'addario, rotosound, GHS, ect. Try nickel and steel rounds (don't worry about fret wear at this point... it won't be an issue for years.)

Steve Harris pulled off flats for metal, but I think you are better off with some nice bright rounds. Rotos or my personal favorite, Blue Steels.
