Not necessarily. Depends on the make/model.

Inquire to the manufacturer...

Harder how?

Stainless steel is a harder surface than the nickel (can wear frets and give blisters quicker)

If you mean tension or stiffness... it depends on core size and shape.

yessir i did mean stiffness.i mean if i have a nickel pltaed string does that mean the steel inside is smaller or its the same steel string with the extra nickel layer?its just that my tbird came with 45-105s,clearest bass i ever heard which why i bought it and i put my fav 40-100 and now it buzzes.

it makes sense that you went to a lesser "tension" string and now you simply need a little more "relief" or bow in the neck. The other factor is each string is slightly smaller in diameter... you might need the bridge saddles raised slightly.

The core size and shape varies from maker to maker and model to model

I never measure it... my fretlesses I keep medium low, my fretted ones are set higher. I play with a hard attack and cannot handle super low action.
