Nickel string suggestions for Lakland

Sign in to disble this ad
I Just got my used 5501 and need new strings. I don't have the money to try a bunch of different sets, so I thought I'd seek some advice.
1-I need some recommendations for NICKEL strings that will fit the 35" scale...easy to find brands that don't require ordering online.
2-Any advantages/disadvantages if I string through the bridge? It seems like there would be more strings readily available this way.
3-I have a new set of long scale GHS Boomers (.045-.130) for my other bass, but I'm unsure if these would be long enough for the Lakland. Anyone know for sure (either through bridge or body)?
Thanks!

1. DR Sunbeams!
2. It's supposed to provide more fundamental/sustain as opposed to top loading the strings.
3. Not sure on these - hopefully someone else will chime in.

Good luck!

DR Sunbeams were my first thought also, but the stores in my area only carry the SS DR varieties . Between SS Loriders and Hibeams, which would you say would be the closest to the warm and less harsh sound of nickel?

ndrifka, have you contacted Lakland for their strings yet. I believe they use a custom set of DR nickels. I have a 4 string so the 5 'er may be different. If you like the strings they came with you can order from them and they are not too expensive.

That's a good idea. I'll look into it for my next set.

I did pick up a pack of nickel Loriders about an hour ago, but I had to make a ton of calls to find some nickel strings from DR sold at my local music stores. Tons of stainless DR's out there though .

ndrifka, I just looked at the order form that came with mine and they have both nickel and stainless available for the 4 and 5 string in either nickel or stainless.

Last time I ordered I purchased both. I will order only nickel next time!

Guys, don't forget the Skyline 55-01 is a 35" scale bass, and the Lakland strings are long enough to install "string-through." That said, I like the Lakland nickel roundwounds but also would love to hear about others that fit, either string-through or not.

DR strings are long enough for 35" scale basses, even thru-bridge, IIRC.

I had MTD Nickels on my 55-02 strung through-body and they absolutely rocked.

R. Cocco's are great strings. I have them on my Skjold, MTD 535 and my Yamaha Nathan East BBNE 2 signature.

incorrect, its the other way around

the high beams are round core, with more bightness

the low riders are hex core and warmer

I'm under the impression that DR makes Lakland custom strings. Some folks think it's GHS that makes them for Lakland. Does anyone have the skivvy on this? Thanks!
