Are Nickel strings kinder to fretless?

Thinking about putting a set of rounds on my MIM fretless jazz but don't want steel as they chew up the board. Will nickel strings have the same effect? I keep reading they are softer but I tried a set of Roto preasurewound's and they were just as bad as steel.

I've never used Rotos but have heard that they are very aggressive on frets. So I would assume they would be equally aggressive on a rosewood board.

Do a search as there are quite a few postings one strings that are more "fretless friendly". I'm a fan of D'addario strings on my fretless. But I have an ebony board on mine.
