Nickel vs Steel

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I just did a search here and could not come up with a thread already dedicated to this subject. If there is one please point me in that direction.

I have a set of steel and nickel MTD 135x's and am curious. Which is brighter? Is one set more for a particular style of music?

Help here would be appreciated...

Stainless Steel is always brighter, or at least will stay brighter after about 1 hour of playing, than Nickel..

For me, it is not the brightness it is the difference in mids.

I just went back to steel (40-100 LaBella HRS) are using nickels (45-105 Sadowsky, TI SAs) for a while on my Sadowsky RV5. In this case I traded low mid punch and fatness of the nickels for higher mid clarity and cut of the steels. Playing classic rock and country I thought I was a nickel guy. But in the contemporary praise band I am a steel guy.

I don't like the way the polls setup, I'm an avid Nickel guy and purposely get them cos they're NOT as bright most of the time. You've forced me to vote Stainless!!! Booo!!! Rabble Rabble Rabble!

Stainless Steel strings are almost always much brighter, which is why I prefer Nickel strings so much.

Nickel will almost always feel "softer" under your fingers and generally produce less finger/string noise. I use both, but generally prefer nickel. It all really depends on the bass and the style of music I am playing.

If I wasn't so white and got away with playing funk I'd be all over Stainless strings, Stainless Lo-Riders are awesome, not to mention how cool that guy on his motorbike looks on the packets.

No matter what steel strings I try, I always go back to nickel, and I'm pretty much dead set on DR sunbeams now. SO I MUST VOTE CARROTS.

On my epoxied-fingerboard fretless (the only bass I play),

steel-only please.

'Nuff said.
