nickels for a Modulus

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Folks,

I need a suggestion for a nickel string to try.

I've got a Modulus Bassstar with EMGs. Very bright bass as you might imagine, and I've got Markley Nickel plated steels on it right now. I like to be able to get a bright piano-y tone, but I would also be able to mellow it out a bit more for some ensemble playing I do. Even with the EQ all the way down it's still pretty bright.

I was thinking nickels, and originally D'Addario XLs but I see they are also nickel-plated steel. What else would be good for me?

I imagine flats won't work as they will be too mellow for what I'm after (I have flats on a fretless p-bass and love them there, but that's a different application).

Thanks.

I have Dunlop nickels on my M92/5 and I rather like them. I think you will find that almost all "nickel" strings are nickel plated steel.

I also find that I like my strings more after they've been on the bass for about a month.

Have you ever tried DR Black Beauties? I have them on my Modulus FB5 (Not the same PUP/Pre config) but still awesome strings that can do everything that I ask!

If you feel your bass is mid-scooped, I found the TI Infeld Superalloy strings to be fantastic in bringing back some warm-mid character on my Zon Sonus.

Thats all I play on several Modulus basses and its not overly bright.
In fact I would call it balanced.

Thanks for the replies. I will pick up some TIs and XLs and see what I like. I'm worried that coated strings will be too dull for a more aggressive rock sound when I need it, though the black on black would be a nice look. (If I'm way off base in this assumption, please correct me).
