Nickle Round vs. Flatwound

Sign in to disble this ad
I should be getting my first fretless bass in soon, and I'm not quite too sure as to which strings I should be looking at. I know these are the two most common strings used on fretless basses, and I was just wondering what the difference is between the two in tone amd durability. I'm a lot more fond of that deep smooth growl.

I think most people would agree, nickel works best for fretless. They sound better and don't wear down the fingerboard as quick.

Sound is a personal preference, but I think that flatwounds are the easiest on the fingerboard.

Don't forget compression-wound or pressure-wound strings. . . they are flattened roundowonds that have 1/2 the characteristics of a flats (smooth feel, thumpy sound) and rounds (definition and brightness.

Smith, Daddario and GHS makes them.

also, hex-core flats, like LaBellas or Sadowsky, are a lot brighter and have more definition, than say, TI flats which has a round core.
