No silk makes me sad :(

Just an thought I had to day. Picked up some D'addario Nickel Wounds from GC today just to change it up a bit, and when I opened them I saw that they didn't have any colored silk wrapping. Idk why, but I really like having the color, I think it looks cool (this has no effect on how i feel about he string itself, mind you). Anyone else feel this way?

You're right. A bit of color makes the strings look more funky. And if they extra motivate the player to play, they may even sound more funky. And you also have the certainty, they don't scratch the tuning posts...

I hate silks generally. They start to look like crap after a while. Reminds me of an unshaven female.

Hate silks. Why should my string manufacturer choice dictate what color i'm stuck with on my headstock and bridge? and not to mention the fraying of silks... bleh...

Keep giving me nekked strings please.

I do like the look of silks. Somehow just seems like a classy touch or some such nonsense. Lol. Only exception being colored strings like dr neons etc.

Compensate with silk underwear. Problem solved.

Exactly! I just think theres something nice about the silk. Seeing a P-bass headstock with naked strings just seems... off. Its like an indescribable thing. I totally get what stflbn is saying, but I just like it.

Coming from a Rotosound user, I happen to think it's odd to no see red silk on my P Bass' headstocks. I tried DRs, and loved the sound, but it looked 'off.' Not like a bass should look. I still use my Rotos, and use DRs for practice because they last so much longer, but the Swingbass just look 'right.'

I'd like to see DR try a string with their colored strings on the INNER wraps with normal outer windings!

That way they would have the look of silks, but would never fray and still look good. Black or any of the Neons...now that would be interesting!

I have to admit, it's never really bothered me. Helps me remember which brand strings are on what bass!

Silk does give a little zest to your headstock. I can't stand to not have silk on the head of my P bass, it looks... blank.

But I'm so analytical.... if my silk frays, it bugs me to no end.

If you don't want the wilk to fray, don't remove the strings / swap them so much

I just got some strings with black silk and I really think it's classy looking. I don't let silk wrapping dictate what strings I buy though.

Just put them on this morning, but the tone is FAT! Really enjoying them so far. Ordered a 5er set for one of my Rays to see how I like them on an active 5er.

How long have you had yours on? Losing much tone/brightness?

+1.

Not only that, but silk wrapped strings are weaker than non-silk wrapped strings. The outer wrap of a silk-wrapped string is not wound normally, it is spaced out so that the string's core is partially exposed. This leads to a greater chance of breaking the string when you remove your strings frequently.

I can't stand silk wrapped strings, and don't know why any company still manufactures strings that way.

They've been on about a week or so but all I'm doin' is woodshedding right now, just getting my chops back, so they haven't been played that much or that hard.

They seem to me to getting a little smoother without losing any clarity or definition but that could just be my perception. The upper register on the D and G still have plenty of snap. Not overly bright but punchy and I get a nice growl out of the E string and lower A.

They're most definitely what I was looking for.

Not a silk fan - I greatly prefer plain ends.

Me, I don't know why ANYONE would choose strings based on the color of the silks...

Choosing strings based on silk is kinda..... stupid? I prefer the look of silk. And I prefer the feel and tone of Rotosounds. So it all works out.
