Question Noobe ? DR Fatbeams Too long?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just started to install a set of MM fatbeams on my Geddy Lee. The E string seems too long. The part where it tapers up to its full size will be wrapped around the tunner. Is this OK or what?

Thanks

Yeah, it happens. Not really a big deal. I've had that happen with a few strings and it's not the end of the world. I believe that happened on the last set of Fat Beams I installed on my bass, so I don't think you're the only one.

its fine. i have Hi-Beams on my jazz right now and the E Taper is a little on the tuner. no worries.

Personally, i don't like to cut my strings, i have this strange superstition that it loses tension.

Really? So do you just have, like, six windings around each post? I usually cut them down so I have about two and a half to three.

yeah its only somewhat problematic with the E string. The rest i have enough room on the tuner, but on the E string i really have to start up high and make sure it's all tight on the post.

It's that stupid warning paper DR puts in their strings sets. It says if you cut the strings you need to bend them. i say "screw it" and don't cut them. it's not that i don't know how to cut them, i just don't know what they mean by bend them, do i bend them and put a bent string inside the post, or just bend it around the post?

What I've always done is cut them and then use a needle-nose pliers to put a 90-degree bend at the end of the string about an inch or so long. That gets inserted down into the hole in the center of the post, so the bended portion is perpendicular to the body while the length of the string after is parallel.

I know that you are supposed to put a bend in a string before you cut it. I think I saw that in the sticky here in the strings forum. I just did not know if it would be OK to have the fat part of the string arround the peg.

Thanks to all for your help.

That's what I do, also; The pliers make it so much easier.

Glad to know I'm not crazy. Or not crazy and alone, anyway.

Well, different strokes and all that. If your method has worked for as long as it has, don't feel compelled to change!

They tell you to bend them for good reason as the outer wrap will slip on the round core in the DR string if you do not.

The hex core does not require bending as it inhibits the slipping by the edges of the core biting into the outer wrap.
