Ok, i have a small problem and i am trying to to cancel things out here.

The sound i am getting sounds like i have a fuzz pedal through my rig. I thought it was the amp, so have recently built myself one and the sound is still the same. I then changed the battery in my bass to no avail. I so don't want it to be my speaker cab..

What i am asking is that: My strings are fairly old, been through a boil once a few months back. Can they have any effect on the sound, can they make it a little distorted? not so clean etc?

So too, i figured i would brush my frets up if i got new strings, can that improve the sound?

Try taking your whole rig to a music store (or a friend's place who has a rig with the same configuration rig as you). Substitute components -- bass, cords, head, cab -- one by one until the noise goes away. The substitute at that moment will be the guilty party.
