if your strings die too quickly... buy new ones or wipe them down with rubbing alcohol.

If you want flat's tone, get flats!

+1

Ernie Ball string wipes do a nice job of bringing life back to strings as well.

No No No, your misunderstanding me, i dont have a problem, my hands are sweat free so my strings last for ages but i was reading a thread where someones strings did die quickly, and everybody said move to flats, but this guy didnt want that dead tone, and flats give that dead tone, so why were people saying he should move to flats?

Without reading the actual thread, I'd speculate that it's because very often on TB people read the thread title but don't read the actual post or what the person is looking to achieve.

What follows is generally a series of posts where people list their favorite gear without actually addressing the concerns of the OP.

My opinion is because flats have a percussive character to them that dead rounds can't duplicate...at least no dead rounds that I've played.

I don't think new flats are all that dead sounding. They don't have the same bite as rounds, but there's definitely some juice in them.

Most Flats do not sound "dead" as some people say they do , granted there may be some that sound dead but most flats simply have less treble zing rather than actually sounding dead. Ernie ball and Daddario flats for example are quite bright for flats, Daddario sounding almost as bright as a roundwound and whereas a roundwound will go dead after a relatively short time , flats will hold the same tone for a long time.

Well the flats i have played, i've played rotosound jazz bass 77 and d'addario XL chrome flats and they both just sounded nothing like bright strings at all to me.

I usually play d'addario XL nickels and they sound nothing alike, sure i quite liked the flats for their warm sound but what i dont get is why people said flats when they wanted the bright zing of new roundwounds?

Absolutely. Most people don't mind when this happens though and enjoy the thread anyway.
The ones who DO mind are either:
  1. Too stupid to understand that people post without reading entire threads
  2. A total pr1ck who tries to ruin everyones fun

An even better trick is to soak 'em in pure ethanol for a day or two, brings them back brand new. I've sets I've soaked 5-6 times, and they're still going strong. The only set I've had to replace was a set where the frets had worn down the string windings to the point where they broke.
