| Sounds like you want nickel rounds. They have a warm tone fingerstyle, but have an excelent edge when you slap em. Strings in general have gotten a lot better over the past few years; they don't deaden as quickly, therefore keeping their feel and tone for quite a while. I personally would recommend D'Addario strings; I use the EXP bronze strings on my acoustic and the XL 5-string set 45-130 on my fiver. When the strings on my Jazz go (they've been remarkably resilient for a stock set of Fenders), I'll swap em out with XL 45-100s. These strings last forever (and they have a good shelf-life as well; they're packed in an airtight, oxygen-absorbing bag so the strings won't oxidize), and even when they mellow you still can easily get some bite out of em.
I also use Dean Markley Blue Steels on a couple of my basses. I would not recommend them on a Fender Jazz unless you were going for absolutely-super-bright. The ones I have them on are very dark-sounding instruments that use them well to brighten up more aggressive playing.
