Old Flatwounds Intonation Question

I have read that roundwound strings will eventually become hard to intonate if left on too long. This is often given as a main reason to change strings frequently.

Why does this not happen with flats? It is often said that flats get better with age. How is this?

I believe they eventually do, it just takes a whole lot longer. Also the tone settings that many flatwound players use make those intonation problems not show up as much. Not positive on that though. When people are talking about flats getting better with age, it's the tone they're talking about.
