well i just been listening to chas from chas n dave on the radio , he bought one of the first bass guitars available in the uk in the late 1950's , he goes on to say he only ever changed the strings once, , in 1964 , and its still has those strings on it and he still plays it

I wonder how long a piano normally goes without a restringing.

Too long usually. A cheap piano costs less than what it costs to restring one.


As to the OP, flats or not, anyone who is still playing on strings from 1964 has rocks for brains.

A music professor that I had at the University of Oregon told me he had the same set of dead strings on his bass since the day he bought it... in the early 70s. He gigged regularly and everyone agreed that his tone was righteous.

Old strings aren't for everyone. They lose most of their intonation and playability after a decade or so, but nothing comes close to that tone IMO.
