want to try loriders, have only tried hibeams yet. I already know riders are stiffer than beams, but someone here said that they still more flexible than any other hex string. Is it true? It will help me choose my gauge. FYI my favorites were RotoSound 66 45-130. Should I go for 45 or 40? I think 45-125 will be right, m? |

I use DR Long Necks, which are basically the extended scale version of the LoRiders, and 45-125 works well for me. I use them on a 35" scale Lakland and have a light touch, though, for what it's worth.

D'Addario are a little more flexible than Rotos in the same gauge, and these are a little more flexible than LoRiders in the same gauge. The difference between Rotos and LoRiders is pretty small, so get them in the same gauge as your preferred Rotos if you don't have problems with slightly stiffer strings.

I used a set of sun beams for a while and found them lacking in the mids, which was a big let down. |

I think they get a reputation for stiffness because they're often compared to DR's more flexible round core strings. I'm actually using a set of each right now -- Lo-Riders on a G&L JB, and round core Fat Beams on an SB-2 -- and I think both are fantastic. The Lo-Riders are noticeably stiffer than the Fat Beams, but similar to the old version of Fender 8250's I have on my MIA Fender Jazz.

It's been a while since I used Hi-Beams. As far as tension it would go Lo-Riders, Hi-Beams then Sunbeams from highest to lowest tension. I love the way the Sunbeams feel. Only the coated Black Beauties feel nicer...almost a slinky tension. As far as sound I find the Sunbeams the most balanced. The Hi-beams have a lot of snap and the Lo-Riders sound very similar to the Sunbeams with a nicer feel. I am not the type to change strings very often so take my findings with a nice heap of salt. |

I think all three of the above mentioned DR strings are excellent strings and the description given of their performance is spot-on.
My favorite of the 3 would be the sun-beams......... but I currently have the hi-beams on my main bass and they are great as well. |

I don't find them to have any more or less tension, on average, than any other hex-core roundwound string. The tension will feel pretty much the same. The texture of the strings will probably be much kinder to your fingers than Rotos, but the tension will not be much different.
