| Orange Silk Covering - What strings?

Hello,
I bought a bass here on TB in April of 2007 and I have been thinking about finally changing the strings on it. The strings still sound good in my opinion, but maybe a new set could get me a better sound? I know that is all subject to taste, but I figure I could atleast try it out. These strings are very smooth feeling (is that just because they are worn out?) rounds. I do not know if they are steels or nickles...I would imagine nickles, but I could be wrong. I would say the gauge is a medium, wether it be .045 - .105 or .045 - .100 (its a MIM Fender Jazz, so the stock says .045, .065, .080, .100 in the Superbass 7250ML). The only info I can give about the strings is that they have the orange silk (?) covering on the ends of the strings that you wrap around the posts on the headstock. Anyone have any ideas what these are?
Thanks
