Other 5-string sets similar to the DR lowriders?

So yeah, the title may explain it, but I'm looking for a new set of strings for my 5-string Ibanez. I really dig the feel and sound of most of the strings on my current set, but the B is pretty dead (always has been), and the E is getting there too.

I'm just curious if there's another set of strings out there that can get me a similar feel, while being more balanced tonally. I just want low, thumpy, grindy, strings and I'm not sure if it's worth going flatwound.

The DR Lo-Riders are stainless steel which tends to be bright. If you are looking for only a little more thump you might wanna try the nickle Lo-Riders. If you are wanting to stick with stainless steel but wanna try a different brand Dean Markley Blue Steel strings are similar. Another choice for a little more thump is the DR Highbeams. I find the Highbeams to have a similar slap tone to the Lo-Rdiers but when playing with fingers or a pick they are much warmer. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I forgot to mention that I have been using nickel Lo-riders though, so I am looking for a somewhat lower rumbly voice

Perhaps the DR Sunbeams might be what you're looking for then. They are basically just the nickle version of the Highbeams.

Are you sure it's the strings and not your bass? I've never found Lo-Riders to be "unbalanced".

yeah, i've never had issues with the bass. these strings just have a HORRIBLE low B. the worst of any set i've ever used on the bass. I love the rest of the set and was hoping for something similar, perhaps from another manufacturer.

Give some TaperCore strings a shot?

That B should not be "horrible," Are you drop tuning it or anything like that?

How old is the set?

You may want to check out the DR DDTs. The B is supposed to be much improved over the other DR Bs which historically are not as good as most.

For nickel you might want to check out La Bella Slappers. For steel there is La Bella Hard Rockin Steels. La Bella has awesome B strings.

Thanks guys. The set isn't that new, but it's the fastest that I've had a set start to go dead on me. I've probably had it for a few months, but it's only one of my two basses that I alternate between, so the B and E strings shouldn't be so worn. Also, the B was pretty much always the worst B I've ever had, it's just gone dead very quickly as well, which has made it worse.

I see no need to downtune on a 5-string, so I really don't do it.
Thanks for the suggestion for the LaBella's, Dave. I've heard good things about them.

And would anyone like to explain the advantages/disadvantages to a taper core string please?
