A P-bass with Roto 66's

What is it about this combo?
I use all kinds of strings, DRs, Chromes, Labellas--always experimenting.
But I just slapped a set of trusty steel Swing Bass Rotos on one of my otherwise flatwound-strung P's, and man, it just sounds RIGHT. I'm talking Bruce Thomas, Dave Hope, T-Bone Wolk, heck . . .it just sounds classic. Killer!

That's right baby--Live at Leeds . . . .

And what about 'ol Deacy . . .

it may be the most recorded bass/string combo ever.

It will sound right for about a month. Then, you'll need another set of strings.

yeah, but I'm normally a dead flats guy! I grew up putting a new set of 66's on my Rick every month, so I'm used to how they wear. I actually like 'em after a few weeks anyways . . .

Roto 66's?

Too much zing for a couple of days, then a nice zing for a few weeks then they die.

You can boil them to get a second life out of them.

Classic sound though, very popular in the 80's.

Are there any strings that get that tone but last longer?

I dunno. There's certainly more "refined" strings out there that are technically "better" I suppose--I use DRs typically for rounds.
I like worn-in strings anyways so long life has never been that big a factor personally.
Maybe it's just 'cause it's such a classic combo from days of yore, I put them on and it felt like my youth And they DO have a certain sound that just kinda works great with a regular 'ol P.
