Peavey T-40 Flats

Sign in to disble this ad
Looking for a flatwounds that fit my Peavey T-40.

The bass has a long neck, large body, and through body bridge. It is tough to get strings that make it all the way.

I don't have any brand preference, however I am not spending $100 for a set of electric bass strings.

I am looking for strings that:

- Get a decent amount of wraps around the tuners
- Don't taper before they get past the nut
- Don't have silk, nylon, or whatever hanging over the fretboard.

What brands can accomplish this?

I'm looking more situations where people have experimental validation rather than for people to say, "these strings are pretty long, they should work!"

Thanks.

Well, I just had a set of Labella flats on my T-40, and they worked out fine. There was a little bit of silk winding hanging over the nut on the E string though. But it didn't seem to affect anything tone-wise, so as long as you get the long scale Labella's, you shouldn't have any trouble. I think you'll probably just have to accept a little bit of silk hanging over, because flatwounds are really just not meant to be strung through-body. The T-40 has a relatively shallow angle of string pull over the bridge saddles, but on most basses the angle of the string pull will just snap a flatwound, because they're not as flexible as rounds and thus not able to deal with a steep angle like that under pressure.

I took them off because Labella's are pretty dark sounding (probably one of the darker flat brands), and although I'm used them on a few of my other basses, they were a little bit too dark for my taste on the T-40. But they feel great, so I'd give them a shot.

I had no idea that string throughs shouldn't have flatwounds, but sure enough...

"Important note: La Bella flat wound strings are not suitable for use on instruments that require through-body stringing."

The long response time for my thread is all starting to make sense.
