Hi,
I've just received a 2nd hand Lakland 55-02, and am a bit disappointed with the B string.
The strings on the bass appear to be D'Addario, judging from the coloured ball ends.
The E-G sound OK, but the B sounds unfocused to me. I was hoping for a bit more of the much vaunted Lakland "Piano" string clarity on the B.
What are the best brands and gauges for getting a nice clear sound on the B? I would try a set of Lakland strings, but I'm having trouble finding a source for these (either internet or locally... I'm in Australia.)
BTW, the bass comes with the older Bart pups, rather than the newer Lakland pups. I was told it was a 2007 bass, but actually it's a 2002, to my annoyance.
If there is an online source of Lakland strings, or anyone knows where I can get them in Australia, please advise.
-Mark

Which gauge balances better? It's a bit of a toss up -- currently on the 4 string using 45 65 80 100 (Ernie Balls) -- I see the Lakland lights are 40 60 80 100 128 and the Lakland mediums are 45 65 85 105 128.
Any advice on gauge appreciated.
-Mark

Or try the lakland strings, but I didn't love them, personally.
Don't bother with through-bridge stringing. It does nothing and limits your string choices. |

| | | | DR's............
It may also be what you're playing your 55-02 through. Can your rig replicate the fundemental of a low B? I think it's 37 hertz.... |

Specifically the balanced 4 set - LAB_M50M or LAB_M50M-EXL (depending on whether you need the long or extra long set) - and a single HRS .135 of a length that is appropriate to your bass.
They are tapered so the upper transients will be a bit more prominent, but not as pronounced as a bare core set. If they aren't as lively as you hope them to be you can try the bare cores - La Bella's flavor would be the Super Steps. There is also the Roto PSD 99s if you are willing to set your own ball ends (which I think is absolutely brilliant).
A caveat - Barts may work against the piano chime as they have a slight, inherently darker sound than other pickups.

| | | | Get a set of Pedulla Steel. They are similar to DR Longnecks, but have a better feel, very piano-like and give you really good string to string balance. Let me know if you need a set. I can get you the hookup. Steve

I have always wondered why people would want their bass to sound like a piano? Isn't that a completely different instrument? |

| | | | Have you tried adjusting the pickups for best sound on that side? Sometimes a pups position can result in a bit of a unfocussed or weak sound. Adjust each pup seperately solod then little tweak one or the other if needed for both on full.
Dr neons have great low end focus/articulation. But not sure if theyd be long enough scale for you. They work fine for top load (my pref) on 35 scale bass. But the E and perhaps the low B, maybe slightly short for outer wrap start if was also strung thru body on 35 scale.
