| Plastic coated strings

Hey fellow TB'ers,
I am trying to find out about strings that are coated in a thick black plastic. A good friend of mine gave me a bass a few years ago. When he gave it to me it had strings with a VERY thick coating of black plastic. Now I have played basses with the black nylon tape winding on them but those are not the strings I am talking about. These had a VERY thick coating of plastic/rubber/vinyl. They were weird and caused my finger tips to hurt. The reason I am trying to find out about them is I think it might help me date my bass. I doubt that the striings had been changed in years. Anyone have any idea what Iam talking about? Please let me know. Thanks!
