Mostly roundwounds...doesn't matter what kind you use. Blue Steels are good but steel rounds eat frets pretty quickly. Nickels are slightly less bright but they're a lot easier on frets.

For CW, you likely won't care if your strings start loosing their "Zing" soon, so I'd go with something cheaper like D'addario. Nickle is a good choice as it is cheaper, softer on the fingers and frets AND is less bright. For you, stings are easy. It's us guys who want crazy ZIIIIING on our strings that are always struggling to find strings

I find Blue Steels to be abrasive and uncomfortable to play. But stings are a very subjective subject. Try out the strings mentioned already, and if you love the tone they give you, stick with them, if not, try something else. A lot of it depends on the bass you'll be playing.

I am a country bass player and zing is out. I am now using two P basses one with Chromes (flats) and another with TI powerbass rounds. Both have good even tone with the rounds TI have good punch and mids. the chromes thud city with mids. I must say i after a few months and a lighter wallet i think the light set of chromes is the best so far.
If you are going to use rounds go nickel. Fender 7150s or 7250s are great and cheap. chromes cost more but feel so good and sit so well in the mix.

I don't know...I still hear plenty of zing on the bass in current country music. But I hope you're right. Country music today sounds like crap with all its modernizing.
