yeah the ends are tapered down to thinner strings, i.e. B to E and E to A

http://www.sitstrings.com/show_product.php?id=33 is an example.

Oh.
So would ADGC be too loose on the normal nut?

How are you going to tune the bass with the BEAD strings?

No, taper refers to the bridge end, which doesn't help the nut at all. B to E? E to A? Huh?

ANYway, you can do it, but you may have to widen the slots in the nut. Then of course, if you decide to switch back, time for a new nut unless you don't mind the rattling.

Yes. The strings will rattle in the slots when played open.

Ive modded several EADG basses to BEAD. You do have to file the nut. Be careful if you do it yourself. If you get too deep in the groove, the sring will just lay on the board.
That will require a new nut right there.

yes why i said he would need to file the nut, however my tapered also are tapered down on the tuner end too just not down to the nut.

That did'nt happen to me. I had a graphite nut, which probably would'nt make a difference, would it?

IME, if there's sufficient down force from the strings on the nut slot the strings won't rattle. If there isn't enough force they can rattle whatever the width of the slot.

Has this thread possibly got confused with two tunings (BEAD, and ADGC)? BEAD will just need the B string nut slot altering, and wont have any rattles. ADGC may have rattles on the G and C.

1) Cut the slots wider - not deeper - be careful!
2) Reset the action height - a tad higher to account for the wider amplitude of the larger gauge strings
3) Reset intonation
