I've been a Rotosound user since the mid 80's? I started off using Rotosound Superwound Funkmasters ( I 'm a devout Geddy Lee /Rush fan as well
) and through the years I've tried a few other string manufacturers: GHS Boomers, Dean Markley Blue Steel, Ernie Ball Slinkies, DR Hi Beams but I kept coming back to my Rotosound Swing Bass 66 45-105's. Now the other day I just felt like doing something kooky so I ordered up a double pack of Daddario XL's 45-100's ( From Bass Strings Online, the best BTW
) and put them on my Fender 62 Jazz RI and my G&L L2000 and you know what? They sound pretty darn good actually. But I have to tell you I think the tension is greater than my Rotos! I know Rotsounds get a bad wrap(pardon the pun!) sometimes on the forum but honestly I think the XL's have a higher tension and for some reason they don't feel as smooth to me as my Rotos which is just odd I'm assuming. But it's like i can feel each wrap of the string. Anyway, time will tell. They certainly are bright for a nickle string and not as gritty in the mids as the Rotos. My 62 Jazz just sounds prettier and my L2K is more tame I think. I left a set of Rotos on my Geddy Lee Jazz for comparison but changing strings is a fun way to change things up and with the price of the XL's not a costly one either. Thought I would share.
