Is This Possible/Safe?

Sign in to disble this ad
*Please note that this is thoroughly hypothetical. I'm just wondering if it's feasible*

Ok so I was on www.juststrings.com and i saw that they sell a GHS single-string .145 I was wondering if I were to get a 5-string if this custom designed pack consisting of individual strings could be tuned BEADG safely. (.145 .115 .095 .075 .065). Thanks for your input. I LOVE thick strings, like the Ernie Ball Power Slinkys on my GSR200 (.110 .90 .75 .55)

I think you could give this a try but, don't think a simple string swap will suffice. It will need some setup.

Depends on the neck you're putting them onto. The LaBella flats that Jamerson et. al. used in the '60s were pretty stout strings, and you could still set up most Fender basses for them with no problem.

That gauge on a big neck, with proper set-up, shouldn't be a problem, especially a graphite reinforced neck. But I wouldn't be trying that set on the five-string equivalent of a Geddy Lee Jazz or the old Fender Performer...
