Possibly dead GHS flatwounds?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just put on my first set of flatwounds, GHS Precision Flats, and although I have never used flats, the e string seems unusually dull, but not necessarily in a bad way. When I plugged into my amp, the whole house rumbled even with the tone knob full. The only reason I asked this was because the d and g strings are quite a bit brighter, with the a in between. So am I just not used to flatwounds, or could this be a dead string?

ghs flats

no not dead but flats are not bright sounding strings.they have a nice vintage woody warm tone to them, especially the lower strings.its an aquired taste, not for everybody, not for slapping.

It's probably not dead...you may need to make some adjustments to the bass after switching to flats however.

I know I am very happy with the flats, I was just wondering if I was overlooking a dead string.

I see this with the GHS Precision Flats I have used. That E and A string feel and sound darker, and the D and G are more tangy.

They will even out as they break in. The two fat strings might always be a little darker, but not as much as now. Nice flats, my favorite on P and J Basses.
