Pressurewound vs Halfround

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all ,

Just wondering, I know that half round strings are rounds that are ground to flat finish and pressure wounds are rounds that have been flattened but what is the difference tonally between half round and pressure wound ? Presumably also pressurewound will have slightly more tension that roundwounds or half rounds

I will give you my findings, fwiw. In the end I think that regardless of what our findings have been regarding the two types of strings that you're going to have to try them to see if they'll work for you. I have used SIT Silencers, Ken Smith Compressors and GHS Pressurewounds and find that they all work very nicely for my likes. However I found that the D'addario half rounds (that many swear by) were awful feeling and sounding and I could not get used to them even though I left them on for weeks longer than I cared to.

I am thinking about putting halfrounds on my MIA Precision.

Which brand is favored by P-bass players?

I think im gonna go with the roto pressurewounds as ive heard they have a good mid presence , also being steel (unlike most pressurewound/halfround) they should be fairly bright

I've used pressurewounds for years.

I like Ken Smith on my P-Basses.
And GHS on my J-basses.

OK , ive bit the bullet and ordered a set of the Rotosound RS55 Solo Bass Pressurewound strings , anybody here tried them? What can I expect from these strings in terms of tone, feel and tension?

Hi , just got the strings today , only had them on for a very short time but heres my impressions so far.
First thing I noticed was that the strings weren't as smooth as I was expecting , I was expecting them to feel close to flatwounds but they are a bit rougher than that. Having played them for a short while though I like the strings so far. Strings feel slightly stiffer than rotosound rs66 roundwounds , sound wise they sound very good, close to the roto rs66 in terms of brightness and they seem brighter than the nickel rounds ive used which is fine with me , string noise is much less than with rs66 as well , they are also very punchy sounding and have a nice kind of growl to them , they seem more alive in the mids. All in all I would say if you are after a string that is bright but with less string noise and fret wear then these are worth trying, if you are using nickel roundwounds and want something darker you would probably be better using groundwounds
