Problem changing to DR's

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys !

I'm relatively new to playing the bass, and up to now have always stayed with the same strings i.e. Daddarios 165's or 170's on my G&L Trib JB2. I've changed these often with no problems.

With all the good things I read, I decided to try out a set of DR Sunbeams NMLR 45-100's.

When I went to put on the new 4th (E) string, I noticed that where the narrow part meets the fatter part of the string was about 1/2" past the tuning post. This meant that the fatter part was going to wind round the post. I assume that's not meant to happen ? The third string seemed to be OK ( the "fat-meets -narrow" part was about 1" away from the post ).

Has this happened to anyone else ? Did I get a wrong E string ? Maybe I ordered the wrong length. I assumed the "L" in NMLR meant longscale.

I abandoned the operation and re-strung with new Daddarios 'till I solve the problem.

Any opinions or advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

That's not the end of the world, just 1/2" or so. What you can do is string it up as you did before (you'll prolly notice that the fully wound part sticks out like the hook on an earpiece or something), and then BY HAND slowly push on the string so it molds to the peg better. Each time you do that, the string will slacken some, and you can tighten it up and do it again. Eventually you'll get it to wind around snug with no slippage or breakage, and you'll be good. Ideal? No. But it works and won't hurt anything.
