Problem with E string

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been having an issue with my E-string and was hoping you guys have a bit more insight as to what's wrong and what to do.

I currently have Labella DTB flatwounds on my Brice HXB-405. All the strings sound great except the E. It's pretty much just dead. Pluck the other 4 strings and they'll ring. Pluck the E and it dies very quickly, like it was being muted or something. The sustain is probably 1/4 of the others. The string for some reason also feels very tight/stiff relative to the others.

I would've guessed that I may have gotten a bad string, but this is already a replacement E since I had a similar problem with the first. I've also put on the stock roundwound E string and it didn't really exhibit this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

I've checked that in addition to a twisted string too. The same symptoms with 2 of the same string is what's confusing me. Obviously there's something wrong here.

Would it have anything to do with the string gauge? The E is a 0.110 which I think is pretty heavy for an E.

YIKES! sounds like something i went through on a fender jazz bass. the e string was just a little dead sounding compared the rest....i tried other strings....even took a bass shop to get set up and look at it.....nada

it wasn't a huge problem...not something someone in the crowd would notice but it was clear as day for me...drove me nuts and was always in my mind :-)

the bass was brand new....i had a friend at a guitar shop...traded me straight up for a used fender of the same model....

now i am happy...

sorry man....i had no luck fixing it

Sadtly it's been a few months already :P But it is beginning to bother me.

Maybe i'll string the bass with roundwounds instead.

so do you feel it's a problem with the bass itself.

i don't know how much you spent. but it may be worth writting a letter to the manufacturer asking to exchange it...

The e-string just sounds deader in that set, for a while. Eventually the other strings will catch up.

Ideally. These don't, however.
