Problem with my Trubass 88s

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought a set of Rotosound Trubass 88 Nylons online a few weeks ago and I'm lovin the sound but im having problems with the E string. All of the others stay in tune fine but the E. When I tune the E up after it is in tune ,with the tuner still on,it will go really sharp then fall down to really flat. I'm not sure what to do about this. Thanks

sounds more like it's slipping on your tuning peg. try wrapping your first wrap of the string around the string after it comes out of the tuning peg hole.

Did you leave enough wrap on the peg?

Could you conceivably take the string off the peg and have about 5 inches of leftover string or more, then? More?

Okay, same question asked a different way: How many wraps around the peg did you make?

PS: It's totally okay if the nylon is touching the peg.

Okay - the only thing you might be able to do is re-wrap the string around the peg so that the first wrap goes over the string, the 2nd goes under and all of the rest go under that one. Other than that, it sounds like your tuning peg itself is slipping and will need to be replaced. You can try a different string if you want, too - see if that is slipping as well.

It's also just barely possible that if the strings are still very new that they just haven't settled in yet - any string with that low of tension is going to take a little while to stretch out. Maybe it's just that it needs some time...?

Ok It has been a few weeks that Ive had these so maybe I just need to give them more time. All of the other strings are tuning up fine and Ive never had any problems like this before with any other set of strings but these strings are a bigger gauge so im not sure if that will have anything to do with it. I will try what you said about wrapping it. Thanks fretlessman71!!

Two other theories: just a bad string, or since the Trubasses are kinda large, maybe the E is getting squeezed in the nut. I'd also try backing your pickups away on the E side. Might be false tones.

My biggest bet is bad strings cause my nut was already wide from the previous owner...definitely not false tones though.

On my jazz the wider part of the string comes up and onto the tuning peg - that's quite a big gauge to be sitting on the peg and it can slip. How far into the peg-hole did you stick the end piece? Mine stabilized after about a week...

One good thing, once they've stabilized, they can go a decade or so before they start to lose their playability - or even longer depending on how you play them.

Well, no, getting as much as possible in there is best. also the bend point on those strings is very wide... you really have to make sure it "breaks" around the edge of the tuning peg at a nice sharp angle - otherwise it doesn't bind against the edge of the peg (the part it bends around on it's first turn) and grip as well...

OK so I emailed Rotosound about this ...thinking it was a bad string. They sent me a new set of strings. I put the E on and bam....same problem. Im thinking now that my E tuning key just cant handle the pull of the string. I'm not sure what to do. Either buy a new tuning key (which i dont know what key could handle this ) or buy different strings. I love the tone of these strings and thats why this sucks.

Hmm... I don't see anywhere above where you say what kind of bass you're putting them on. Let me know and I'll see if I can test - I have a spare E string sitting around and a few basses with different tuning peg designs... You should be able to get the string onto the peg, but not have to tune it beyond the silk onto the peg. On mine, it comes right up but stops just short of bare string.

So its got the regular american style tuners?

I don't see why this is such a problem - unless the hole at the bridge isn't big enough to let the E through to the ball-end with the silk winding ...

You could try putting two tiny washers in front of the ball on the string at the ball end to pull the string through a few fractions of an inch - and see if that works.

I went and looked and the ball is in the normal spot.
