Problem with Pyramid Flatwounds

Sign in to disble this ad
I had gotten a set of Pyramid Gold Flatwounds (Long Scale, 40-105 Set) for Christmas from my Mom. I had intended to use them on my Rogue Violin Bass, which has a 31-inch scale neck. So this past Monday, I took the Rogue to my bass teacher for him to restring it with the Pyramids. He started with the Low-E string. When he got it strung up and started tuning it to pitch, the wire wrapping started to unravel! My teacher said that they Low-E string was useless and I should return them to JustStrings.com. I emailed them and they cannot take it back as a return since the string pack was opened... I'm very confused and angry since I am stuck with strings I'm told I can't use since my Rogue doesn't have a longer scale, when I used a similar set of D'Addario Flats (long scale and 40-105 gauge) on my old Epiphone EB-0 Bass. Is there anything I can do with these strings?? I was very excited to get these and know that I can't use them is upsetting. Someone please give me some advice! Thanks

So the core wire broke, right? Did it happen where the string was beginning to wrap around the tuning peg?

Contact Pyramid and/or their Authorized U.S. Distributor.

Yes that is exactly where it happened! My teacher also heard it pop too.

OK, well, using flats that are too long is a no-no because of this. When the flatwound part of the string starts to bend around the peg, it puts too much strain on the core wire, and it breaks. Stringing 'through body' is discouraged for this reason as well.
Contact Pyramid directly- they may give you a new string, or at least they'll sell you one. Then you can sell the set here, in the classifieds, and get a set that will work.

You're welcome. While you're at it you might ask them if their short-scale set will work on a 31" bass.

Depending on the instruments construction yes... They measure 33" from Ball End to Silk.

I broke one while installing (got a little happy with a string winder), totally my fault, and I told them so. I asked them to sell me a string. They said they don't sell strings, but asked for my address and sent me one for free. Can't beat that level of costumer service.

Getting a new short scale Low-E for free from Pyramid! Paul (who emailed me back from Pyramid's website) said I should have no problem using the other 3 strings from the pack.

Got the Low-E string this morning in the mail. Strung it onto the Rogue and it was a perfect fit! I also cut of some of extra silk on the long scale A, D, and G strings and they were also a perfect fit too and didn't break!
