Problems with tenor tuning

Sign in to disble this ad
I decided to try re-stringing my Spector NS-2 to A-D-G-C. Previously, intonation on the bass was fine, with no issues. I picked up a set of DR strings for a six-string, as the local shop didn't have any single strings in the .30 range.

The G and C strings are fine, but up past the 12th fret, intonation gets really wonky on the lower two. I've moved the saddles to get them in tune at the 12th fret, but above there, when I finger a note, the tone is warbly and the fundamental varies, with odd overtones.

On the upper strings, it's a great sound, but chords using the lower strings are out of the question. The strings are labelled "long neck," and I notice that they are wound thinner for about two inches ahead of the bridge.

Are these the wrong strings, or do I just need to do setup from scratch? It's a 24-fret bass.

PS: sorry if this is a bit basic. I'm just getting back into playing after a 10-year absence.

You may need a new nut due to the smaller string size. Look see how much room you have. You may be able to snug it up a bit with paper if its loose.

I don't like the dr long necks because of similar problems and I also had to raise the action to get rid of fret buzz. Simple question though. Have you adjusted your truss rod when you were intonationg? This could be your problem if you didn't. Hope this helps.

The problem comes from the unwound portion of strings by the bridge. 2 inches is WAY too much. Those are meant for thru-body stringing. This is definitely your problem, been there.

Well, I'll start with the strings, since that's the easiest (possible) solution.

Bear with me, since I just started back after 9 years of not playing. There are ALOT more types of strings than I'm used to seeing! I see many references to "long scale" strings; are these appropriate for my bass?

I'm really not up for playing with the truss rod, since the instrument's nicely set up for standard tuning. At this point, the whole tenor thing is an experiment (albeit a fun one!), and I don't want to make any semi-permanent changes.

Doug raised a good idea with the nut spacing. I tried his suggestion, and it did help a bit. If I decide to stick with this tuning, I'll find something to shim the nut with.

Just curious: I know this tuning isn't a new idea, so for folks that are using it regularly, are they using a custom nut?

Thanks for the suggestions, guys!
