Knuckle, the page is an advert for a $19.95 eBook.

Not worth $20 to me... that's a set of strings.

Even if the book contains lots of useful information, in the end all anyone cares about is how the strings sound (and to a lesser degree, feel). No amount of adjectives can accurately describe the subtle differences between strings that make a person choose one brand or gauge over another.

How long has that site been around? I looked at the front page to their forum and there are hardly any posts.

Whoa! I TOTALLY DISAGREE with you. I think folks care about more than just how the strings sound.
1. The strings had better last for more than two gigs.
2. The strings had better not eat the frets right off the neck.
3. The strings need to be affordable.
4. The gauge quality needs to be consistant.
5. They better not be rusted "new" in their packaging.
6. ...this list could go on and on.

There are tons of things that can effect a string's performance...and that list is really long.
Sounds like you need to get up to speed.

I'm sorry, but this just screams promotional copy to me. Maybe it's not, but you only have one post, joined today, and... I ran out of nice ways to say it: it sounds like promotional copy to me. I would also not tell people to "get up to speed." If someone said that to me I would e-slap them. Opinions are a beautiful thing. His was a right opinion.

Ouch!
Fenderx55 I can appreciate where you are coming from as I've seen your postings here before, and generally agree with you...although I don't recall you playing police in the past. ...I'd be happy to take your e-slap and string pop.

Again, I would stand by my original post. I know there are others on this forum who would agree that a string's sound is not the only thing that matters. This issue is fairly close to home as I recently (last Friday) had a set of DRs that broke (D string) after one hour of playing. GC would not refund or replace the set. There I stood $24.72 lighter in the wallet with no strings. It costed another $20 to get another set. It's a damn shame and I know there are others who have been through the same BS. This is why it is number 1 on the list above. Do players only care about the sound...No way. Not when it turns into a $44.72 bum deal like I ran into. Definitely no promo here for GC.

Point taken.

Anyone who needs a $20 book to find out which strings are affordable is probably having someone tie their shoes for them every morning.

If that happens isn't it a rare occurrence? If Brand X consistently had strings that were rusted they'd cease to be around.

We should probably take this to a new thread.

I don't agree. ...I have bought strings that have been tarnished in the package. Case in point, I got a set from JustStrings that looked like they had been sitting on the shelf since the 1800s. Some of these folks carry old stock.

Plus, you never know what you will be getting from USPS. I've gotten soggy stuff in the mail. A lot of string producers still use unsealed packaging.

Cheers!

There has been a new thread posted on this:
Besides tone, what do you look for when selecting strings?

Cheers!

thread resurrection!

just came across the site recently. i think it's lame that you've gotta shell out string-buyin'-money for access to all the information, but the articles in the "informative archives" are pretty good. at the very least, his description of acoustic guitar strings is useful.
