Prog Rock/Metal Strings

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok my band is playing alot of Prog Rock/Metal is stuff (Rush, Tool, Pain of Salvation, King Crimson, Psychotic Waltz, etc. etc.) and the strings on my bass are kaput and i REALLY need some new ones..

What string do you think will work best for this??? I have a MIM Jazz. I would like the strings to have a real nice lowend but for the mids to be good also.

Thanks in Advance

As always, start off with D'Addario Nickelwounds (XLs). If you're feeling frisky, go with DR LoRiders (make sure they're stainless steel), which I've found to have the most insane midrange of all strings I've tried. You might wanna roll off the treble when the DR's are new.

I just bought a set of SIT Power Wound nickel 45-105's, and think they sound great for the same kind of stuff you mentioned.

DR Lo-Riders. Aggressive sounding, long lasting strings that are unusually comfy on your fingers compared to other SS strings. They have lots of low mids, so they aren't overly deep but the low end that they have cuts right through a mix. They have lots of treble at first, but they settle in to just right after a couple days of moderate playing. They are my favorite strings and I love progressive metal.

Rotosounds. If you're into prog, then you'll probably like them because Geddy Lee and Chris Squire use them. I know from my experience that D'Addarios and DR's don't give me the same tone as Roto's.

You start out with something because it's a well-priced, tonally balanced proven-and-proven-again string. Stay off DR's if you think D'Addario nickels are too bright - or your head will explode.
