Putting bass strings on a baritone ukulele, will it work?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi
One thing I would really like right now would be have the ability to take my bass anywhere. I know they arn't that big, but having something I can just sling over my shoulder, and won't take up and entire seat on the school bus when I have lessons would be quite useful :P
However, right now I can't afford an ashbory bass or similar travel bass, but I do have a bit of money.
I saw on youtube, someone made a (not sure if it was concert or baritone scale) size ukulele bass instrument, tuned EADG at the bass octave. I was thinking, I've done some googling, and it seems possible, to put bass strings on a baritone size (20" scale) ukulele?
So far I know I'll need nylons, but I'm fairly new to string world (only just changed from my factory stock ones a few weeks ago ) so which would you reccomend?
The options I'm looking at are rotosound, with a medium gauge, or ashbory strings.
I know I'll need a heavy gauge to get the sound I need, but I also need them to be light enough to actually fit into the bridge and nut
I will be able to make some small adjustments to the bridge and nut if required - in the product design block at my school, you can literally just go into the workshop and do whatever you want, supervised ofcourse :P and I know that a student there did make a guitar for A level, including carving his own nut, so I'm assuming the teachers will have some slight experience there - but I'd rather just be able to put them on and play :P

Does anyone have any experience of doing something similar? And my budget is only around £100... and most baritones are around £60-£70, so that gives me about £40 to play with for strings and hacking away at the actual guitar :P

Thanks

i know little of ukes, but i'd bet the bridge is only glued to the top (like a classical guitar), so my guess would be to find nylon bass strings. not just nylon WOUND, but all nylon (like classical guitar strings)! otherwise, say bye bye to your bridge if you put steel strings on it.
