Ok, so I've always seen a bass with the string put in the hole and wrapped around like that, but now I've also seen people who dont put in the hole and just wrap it around the post. So is their any negatives to not putting the string in the hole of the tuning peg, or can you just do it either way? |

I don't know why anyone would not start with the string in the post hole. How to String a Bass Guitar

I'm almost certain the wrap wouldn't be stable and would go out of tune easily if it does stay on the post.

Same here.
I have never broke a string this way. |

Bend that string 90 degrees and anchor it in the tuner hole, friend, and you will be a happier guy when playing.

| | bassist for staind | | | | | if you dont put the string in the hole, you can do 2 bends thru (on each side) the post slot instead of one. it locks in there and stays in tune better.

That's a great way to string as well! I admit, I still thread into the hole- as long as their are a couple of wraps on the post, you can rely on no slipping. At least with typical bass gauge strings that is. I always bend, loop under and tuck plain steel strings on guitar. |
