Putting the string in the hole or just wrapping it?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, so I've always seen a bass with the string put in the hole and wrapped around like that, but now I've also seen people who dont put in the hole and just wrap it around the post. So is their any negatives to not putting the string in the hole of the tuning peg, or can you just do it either way?

The people you are seeing not put the string in the post hole first - may not know how to string a bass.

I don't know why anyone would not start with the string in the post hole.

If I'm understanding what you're saying, I'm not even sure how the string would stay on the post if it wasn't inserted into the hole. I'm almost certain the wrap wouldn't be stable and would go out of tune easily if it does stay on the post.

I have always put the string into the hole. The first (90 degree) bend out onto the tuner is largely what makes the string grab on and stay put.

The string goes in the hole. Bass strings arent meant to be done guitar style on tuning post.

As a guitarist, what do you mean guitar style? All four of my guitars have posts with a hole in them horizontally. Other than that, it's the same as a bass.

Ok guys thanks for your opinions. I thought it was stupid to and it looks ugly. I personally put it in the hole just seeing what other guys do out there.

Stick it in the hole. Your girlfriend will appreciate your instrument more that way.

Such people probably don't own a cutter and are too lazy to do so many turns.

Just because you've seen basses strung incorrectly doesn't mean you should do it too...even if they were players that you liked.

Bend that string 90 degrees and anchor it in the tuner hole, friend, and you will be a happier guy when playing.

if you dont put the string in the hole, you can do 2 bends thru (on each side) the post slot instead of one. it locks in there and stays in tune better.

Yup. That's a great way to string as well! I admit, I still thread into the hole- as long as their are a couple of wraps on the post, you can rely on no slipping. At least with typical bass gauge strings that is. I always bend, loop under and tuck plain steel strings on guitar.

I put my string in the hole personally. I was just wondering why people wouldnt put it in there just wondering if theres was some pros to that method.

I've seen some Billy Sheehan videos lately where his strings are just wrapped and cut with several inches extending from the tuning posts. Looks like absolute sh*t to me whenever I see strings installed like that.
