Lightbulb Pyramid Gold Flatwound Strings

Sign in to disble this ad
This past week I came to that point again. It was time to change the strings on my 5 string. Well, I was tired of Boomers and Elixirs and all the other rubbish, so I thought I'd try something new. I cruised over to the great guys at C.B. Perkins in the San Fran Bay Area and asked what I should do. They recommended Pyramid Gold Flatwounds, since I liked the smooth sound and feel offered as opposed to Roundwounds. Needless to say, when I played them that night in a stadium sized building they roared! Man did these strings rock! The tone is phenomenal as well as how easy they are to play. After a few hours of playing, my fingers were not sore at all. I play a mix of rock, indie, jazz, metal, pop, and ambient music, and these strings are the best I've used. Simply the best!

Pyramid Flats are nice strings; quite different from anything else. McCartney used 'em and so did Phil Lesh, and I heard those familiar tones when I used them.

they probably won't be too great for slap. they have a very full tone quality. you'd probably be looking for something brighter.
in my opinion though, for finger-style playing they're definitely the way to go.

it is the pyramid gold!!!

you cant get a more bass string than that... all other strings sound like guitar strings compared to the Golds!!!

soundsamples will be on my site @ the end of this week
http://www.prauschke.de/deutsch/doublebass.htm

the stainless sounded cool but i dont like the feeling of ss strings
the nickel are really nice strings - to me the same as the fender pure nickels are (but i think im allergic against them :-( )
the nickel plated are GREAT !!!! the same sound and feel the EB slinkys have but theyre cheaper :-)
so go and get them ! support small companies ;-)

hm..... This thread has me interested in these Pyramid Gold Flatwound bass strings.

Does anyone know if these can be strung through-body? Or are they only designed for top-load bass bridges?

Also, anyone know the best place to get them off the web?

May they be from a different company. Eg. Indie?

These are especially for through body:

i ran them on my Rob Allen MB2 Fretted. Sound great--quite unique. They ran through the body with no problem. Keep in mind its a wood/plastic bridge but it handled the bend with no problem.

Actually I just got an email back from Pyramid. They said either way is fine, just as long as the length is ok.

love the pyramid flats-i have used 'em on a variety of basses for years and they always sound great. i had a set on a rickenbacker 4000,but the tension was too much for it, pulling the bridge up,so i reluctantly removed 'em. i put them over on a danelectro hodad, and they kick! i prefer them to the TI's,because of the higher tension.

Their catalog only shows the pyramid golds in a 4 string set. Do they make a 5 string set or did you use a different b string?

I bought a set of the short-scale ones from pickofthericks.com for my Rivoli. They are the most pleasant-feeling strings to play. Unfortunately, my Rivoli is having electronics issues right now, so I can't enjoy playing it... But when I get a new short-scale hollowbody, I'm definitely putting Pyramid flats on it.

Does anyone know how these strings compare to TI jazz flats?

I'd also like to know these compare to Chromes, both in tone and tension.
