Dean Markley SR2000s. They are higher tension, but retain a near Rotosound level of growliness that lasts for months. Plus, they are easier on the frets.

DR hi beams, they had way to much zing for my tastes, and they never really lost it. I'm also not a fan of the low tension of round core strings. But they sound exactly like what you are looking for.

I love my Optima 24K Gold. The first month or so you may want to take them of, but after they are broke in they are incredible and they last a looong time. I had a set on my Embassey for 2 years, when I sold the bass the strings still sounded like new. I now have a set on my Raven west 4 string and that combo will never leave my cold dead hands. The strings are pricey but worth it. $100 on Juststrings, or 80ish on e bay through a seller named garygear.

If these strings were good enough for Entwhistle, their good enough for an old hack like me.

So while being more expensive, they will outlast nickle or steel, even coated by 4 to 5 times I guess

Why would you want to take them off? Are they super bright or something? How's the tension on those?

FWIW: I think the Roto 66s are some of the zingiest strings. Personally, I use D'Adarrio EXL170’s (about $12 a pack at www.basstringsonline.com).

I live and die by Elixir strings. They sound like a week old pair out of the box, and they sound like a week old pair 6 months later.

I have Elixers on right now. They've been on for a little over 4 months now and are sounding a little worn out. I just never liked the feel of them though, but I think the guy I had set up my bass gave me standard instead of light gauge possibly.

Are these the right Dean Markleys? I've heard good things about them and one of my favorite bassists used them.

Ahh... Well at least you've tried them, hehe. Honestly I used to use Carvin nickel roundwounds religously, preferred them to many other brands and they are far far cheaper.

Sadowsky Blue label ss last for a long, long time.

Very bright, and lots going on in the hi mids, not just trebley zing. Nice strings that last even longer than DRs IME. Also more tension than Fat or Hi Beams.

Anyone try the new coated bass strings?
I have some coated Elixirs on my acoustic guitar
that are bright and last really long.
Hard to beat Roto 66 for Zing.
