Question about scale length

Sign in to disble this ad
I would like to put flatwounds on my bass, but was told to be aware of the various scale lengths.

My bass measures 35" from bridge contact point to nut. However, the string is threaded through the body, so the total length from nut to ball is about 37 ".

I believe I will need to use "Super Long Scale" or "Long Scale Plus" or "Extended Scale" strings, am I correct? These are supposedly for scale lengths of 36-38 inches.

Deciding which ones to go for -- D'Addarios ECB81SL, GHS precision, Rotosound RZ77EL, or Thomastik Jazz JF364.

Advice, and recommendations much appreciated.

I know D'Addario's Chromes are definitely available in Super Long Scale, which I believe have a 38" winding length.

Chromes are by far my favorite strings, so they would be my recommendation (in Super Long Scale). Unfortunately I can't use them.

Be careful. I think most string manufacturers recommend NOT stringing flats thru the body since the sharp angle at which the string is bent at the bridge can cause damage to the winding.

I know for a fact that the Lakland 'Joe Osborne' Flats have a warning on the package regarding this ...and Lakland is known for their string through body bases.

Larry, I've heard the same thing about stringing flats through the body, but I did it for a couple of years on two different basses and never had one string break.
