Question about strings for my Stingray 5

Sign in to disble this ad
I am in a cover band and we always play a half step down. Right now I have the standard Ernie Ball Regular slinky 5's. Anyone recommend another brand/type of string? I want to try something else.

I use DR Low Riders with my SR 5 and like them a lot.

I tried Slinky's, then Blue Steels, then DR Hi Beams before landing on the Low Riders. Great tone and they last a long time. Some would say they're just a bit stiffer. I would agree and for me that's a good thing.

Do some searching on this site and try a few flavors. You'll find something that suits your tastes/styles.

I haven't tried Blue Steels or Hi Beams, but other than that I agree with zippydog. I like the sound of Lo Riders better than the Slinky's that came on my SR5's. I also found them to be a bit stiffer, which may be a good thing if you're tuning down. I also found them to be pretty long lasting. I had my first SR5 about a year and the Lo Riders still sounded fine when I sold it. That being said, I do like steel rounds once they get older and lose that initial zing, so your tastes may be different.

But overall I really like Lo Riders on an SR5 and, assuming you like the way they sound, it seems like they could be a good fit for you.

The second thing I did after I got my SR5 home was put a set of LaBella 750Fm's on it. I would highly recommend trying a set. I've had 'em on for two years now and they sound fabulous. Very thick, punchy, solid and authoritative. They define the eph in Punch!

What do you want to change about the sound or feel?

Even if you just want to branch out, try to think about what might be fun. More/less tension, more/less brightness or mids ...

Theres a LOT of nice strings out there and many of the will be great on an SR5, depending on what you're going for.

I like hi beams, myself.

I really like heavier strings on my SR5. I'm currently using daddario XLs 50, 70, 85, 105, 130. The 50 g strings sounds much better than the 45 to my ears.

I really like Sadowsky SS on my SR5. The slinkys are ok when they're new, but they don't very long...
