Question about the winding length of Chromes...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Guys,
Sometime ago I tried to use a set of Chromes on my MIA J and strung them thru the body - but when I did that the blue silk wrap on the E did not clear past the nut - the was still about 3-4mm hanging and then I tried them on my new semi-hollow Ibanez Artcore AGB140 and it wasn't even close to making it over. My set was supposed to be the long scale - anyone else have this issue? Or did I accidentally get a short scale E string put in my pack.

I currently use TI flats on the Ibanez but at $47/set I want to go back to Chromes - there is a big difference between the 2 sets but neither one is better or worse than the other, IMHO.

I also wanted to try Halfrounds but I wanna make sure this isn't a problem with D'Addarios before I buy another set.

Anyone know what's up?

Thanks!

Well...

I once had some Chromes, I forget now if they were the long or super long, put on my KSD fretless 35" scale. A tech was doing a setup so I asked him to put those new strings on for me. When I went to pick it up he told me the B string cloth was touching the low C area, like you it did not clear the nut. He said he took a razor blade and trimmed the cloth winding. That portion of the string was still playable so it was OK. I picked up some DA'd XL 170 nickels for my G&L L2500, strung thru body the B was too short so I had to string the B on the bridge, I dont notice any difference sonically.

And I just picked up some Super Long Chromes that I was going to put on my 55-02 but I am reading here on TB that stringing flats thru bridge could make them come unwound in the bridge area because the bend thru body could break open the winding, least I believe thats what I read. So now Im thinking of taking the Super Longs back and just using the longs thru bridge stringing. Now last year I did string some Chromes thru body on my 55-01, did not have a problem then, but Im thinking the Super Longs may be too long. I'll check it this weekend, but at 47 bucks if I open em they wont let me return em. Eat alota yardbird y'all.

Thanks for the reply ErnieD... I didn't even know that there were Super Longs - those ought to work if I can get my hands on a set. But then again, if what you read was right then I shouldn't string them thru the body anyway which solves my problem w/o needing the Super Longs.

Ya, please let me know what happens - and to clarify I meant the TI flats cost $47/set and Chromes are around $20/set that's why I want to find the right lenght and go back to them.

On my G&L 2500 Tribute strung through the body I used super long chromes. I would use long when going through the bridge.

So far no problems with the bend in the strings. And these are the regular scale. However, I chose chromes over LaBella flats specifically because LaBella does not recommend their flats strung through the body.

Normally, I would not bother with through body but there are reports of problems with the bridge coming off on the 2500 Tribute with through the bridge. The bridge is only held on with two screws.
