Question regarding B string on 35'' bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

I used the search function, read a bit through the FAQ and couldn't find what I was looking for, so I figured I might as well post this... I have a 35" 5 string MTD kingston. I bought some new strings yesterday (ghs Bass Boomers), and the string set they gave me was incomplete so they gave me a separate B string (0.125). (On a sidenote I just thought I'd try lighter gauges than my usual). The problem is when I put my new strings on, the "fat part" of the B string is wrapped around the tuning peg, although the string was designed to fit 35" basses. This is the first time this has happened. Usually the fat part of the string ends a bit after the nut. It kind of worries me. Is this normal or is it bad for my bass?

Thanks for helping out and excuse my garrulity

I had the same thing happen to me when I put my FIRST set of new strings on a 35" scale bass, using GHS Boomers, although it was only a 4 string. Turns out the set was an extra long scale set, and regular LONG scale would have fit it properly.
I played out the strings wound up that way, and did not have any problems. Many strings don't have the felt/silk wrap anyway, and you're pretty much winding "string" up on the tuners.
So.. if you have enough wraps on the peg to keep good tune, I would not fret.. well, go ahead and fret, just don't "fret"

Mag...

Yeah, it should not be a problem as long as there is enough string to grip to the post.

I had the same problem with GHS. They had switched to a longer winding length though the packaging still indicated the winding length they used to have. The fat part of the B string around the tuner had snapped almost immediately because it wasn't pliable enough. It kinda sucked before it broke anyway because the string from the nut to the tuning peg was curved instead of a straight line. It simply didn't want to conform and didn't make tuning very comfortable either.

I emailed GHS with digital photos and what do you know: they seemed not to understand or acknowledge what the real problem was, and sent me a couple more strings - with the same damn packaging that had the old measure on it but strings with too long a winding length!

Maybe they should come onto talkbass like Ken Smith has and ask people what winding lengths would be good for them ; }

Thanks for the replies! I went back to the store and they replaced the 38" B-string with a 35" one, .120, which is a bit thin for my taste, but will do quite fine for now. The 38" string gave the bass some serious intonation problems, so I couldn't keep it. Again, thanks a bunch
