i bought a pair of these strings. all the strings except the low E was in a paper cd case like protection sleeve. Is it common for the E string not to be in one? or was i sold an opened pack?

I've bought quite a few DR strings, including a set of red devils. I've never had a string without a sleeve.

I use DR Black Beauties on my Jazz bass exclusively and I have never gotten a pack where a string did not come in a sleeve. I think you got a returned or open pack.

In the Red Devil guitar strings, they've recently changed to having one string visible through windows in the box, and the other 5 in paper. Perhaps this is what you're seeing? The local shop got 12 sets like this and it's obviously deliberate.

Naked beauty

I bought a set of Black Beauties a couple of years ago and all strings were in a sleeve, as usual. I bought another set 2 months ago and the box had a little cut-out, where you could see a small section of the unsleeved E-string without opening the package. I think this is just newer packaging designed to let the buyer see the string color without opening the package.

I bought a 5 string set 2 months ago. The B string was NOT in a sleeve. There was a cut out in the cardboard box so you could see it. I believe they are supposed to be that way.

i wouldnt worry... if it's not cut or has any dings from frets, prob just opened out of curiosity and put back in.

That's the way they are packaged now. Got my new set today. All in sleeves except the E -- which is visible through the cutouts on the front of the packaging. No worries friend, this is not a previously opened package. Just a technique designed to show the color of the string through the cutouts on the box.
