Quick, possibly stupid question!

Hey guys, just a quick one!

I've just bought a short scale bass (squier bronco 30" scale, cheap and cheerful). But I haven't got around to buying short scale strings for it yet.

I do however have some rotosounds that i bought for my P. So 34" standard scale strings. If worst comes to worst and i break a string is there anyway i could use the longer strings with my short scale? I'm thinking maybe strip some of the string that goes into the tuner as i don't think a .105 string will fit in the squiers machine head "slot"

Also, as an aside, what is the nylon wrap on string ends there for, i'm guessing to stop the wire unravelling?

I guess it would work, but I think the wrap may keep unwinding after you started peeling (if it doesent fit in the hole...heh heh). Also it would look pretty terrible with big fat strings wrapped round the posts, which could possibly cause tuning issues maybe? I suppose theres nothing to lose by trying, but strings arent that expensive really, and you could sell the 34" on Ebay.

The silk (its silk not nylon ) doesent serve much of a purpose, its supposed to stop the posts/saddles getting scratched, but I think its for show mainly. Many string makers dont use it at all.

I've used 34" strings on short scale basses a number of times and never had a problem with them. Cut 'em appropriately, bend the ends, install and play. Your wraps will be rather thick at the top end, but that's about it.
