Re-using strings from string-through body?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'd like to move the strings that are currently on my string-thru Jazz to my top-loading Precision. However, I noticed that on the strung-through strings there are two kinks near the bridge because of the string-through, and one of the kinks will be forward of the saddle if I put them on the top-load bridge, if that makes any sense... Can I still use these strings with the two kinks on them on a regular top-loading bridge or will they give me problems?

Sure, you can give it a try.

The kinks will eventually straighten out, probably. But, you have to remember that kink is the point that contacted the saddle, there is also the point where the string contacted the bridge, These points have been under tension and may have been at sharp angles - they are now weak spots - so there is no guarantee you will get much more life out of them before they snap. Also, they kink may prevent the string from vibrating easily, so tone and sustain may suffer.

Good luck.
